Sufficiency and Infallibility of Scripture
John 1 shows us that the Word was before everything, is God, all things being made through Him, nothing was made without Him, is the light of men, shines in the darkness, and darkness has not overcome. It goes on to show that this Word became flesh (Christ Jesus). Both the Old Testament and New Testament point to Christ Jesus. With Scripture being breathed by an all-knowing and all-powerful God, embodied in the eyewitness testimonies and letters regarding the Life of Christ Jesus, we believe Scripture to be the source of Absolute Truth. We believe that an individual's ability to "work out their faith" hinges upon how much they value the authority of Scripture. Moreover, we believe that Scripture is "profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3).
Why We Can Trust Scripture
-
a reliable collection of historical documents
-
written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses who could have refuted their account
-
record of supernatural events that fulfilled specific prophecies
-
claim that writings are divine rather than human in origin
-
no proven contradiction and several archaeological finds that confirm validity of Scripture
-
external standards, such as reliability of sources and internal/external evidence supporting account of sources, set by evidence method that is usually utilized to confirm something in the past (ie: court process).
-
Luke 1 tells us that he wrote an "orderly account," so generations after may know the "certainty of those things" that they are being instructed from his account in Scripture.
